VMware - what's next?

Virtualization Consolidation Academy sponsors VMware User Group in Hungary

Budapest, Hungary – August 27, 2008. VMware User Group Hungary an independent community of VMware users held a conference in Budapest. 56 participants shared best practices and their expertise, while gathering new information about VMware, VKernel and DataCore. Methods and Tools to optimize Vmware environments or to expand virtualization companywide resulted in interesting discussions.

As chairman of the VMware User Group Hungary Attila Sárándi, System Management Expert, MOL opened the conference by sharing his experiences with VMware in his company. Mr. Sárándi pointed out the structure of the server environment and explained the use of VMware across locations in Százhalombatta and Budapest. In these two sites there are respectively 100 and 180 virtual machines used on only 28 physical servers.

Subsequently to his presentation a lively discussion started about elevated licensing costs when using Oracle in virtual environments and about storage bottlenecks. Lovas Balázs the local representative of VMware continued the conference by presenting new possibilities using ThinApp as an application virtualization solution.

Due to the various requests for chargeback solutions in virtual environments and the connection of heterogeneous storage environments with VMware, the Virtualization Consolidation Academy (VCA) was invited to present these topics. After a short introduction of the company by Ildiko Minarik, Customer Relations Agent for Hungary, the CTO of the VCA, Dr. Walter Sarg showed the benefits of complimentary solutions to Vmware.

Especially VKernel as a virtual appliance for VMware resulted in excitement among VMware administrators within the VMware User Group. In a physical environment it was easy to charge for every single server that is used by a department, but in shared environments a chargeback solution is required for billing the actual use of the systems to different departments. VKernel developed a virtual appliance that enables this feature in VMware environments without almost any efforts.

To be able to connect virtual servers to a heterogeneous storage environment Lorant Burian, certified DataCore Trainer of VCA, presented a storage virtualization SAN solution. DataCore SANsymphony is able to collect hardware storage systems across platforms into a single storage pool. From this dynamic pool it is possible to create and present virtual volumes to application servers. The thin provisioning technology of DataCore SANsymphony allows a very effective way of dynamically allocating the disk space to have just enough space just-in-time. In addition the overall I/O-performance of the SAN infrastructure will be increased by utilizing the internal memory of physical storage servers as additional cache. Especially experienced Vmware users pointed out that this hardware independent software solution is to be considered in storage environments.
